Over the years, I've participated in the event in numerous ways - as Stage Manager of the 7th Street stage twice, ran booth a booth for Lavender Lounge distributing free lube, ran a booth for Naked Sword, ran a booth for the Sisters, MC'd on both stages, videotaped a special for my TV show, worked the gates as a Sister, worked the crowd dressed as Diane Feinstein, shot B-roll footage for a porn movie I directed called "Street Fair Meat", threw three infamous after parties, but mostly just ran around shirtless hoping to get laid. Is someone on the inside of the closet, staring down at the doorknob, not sure what to do next? John Travolta and I are the same age, and I've always used him as a reference point to compare how I've aged. I came out just before "Saturday Night Fever" and John Travolta was the hottest looking guy in Hollywood. I hate to admit it, but I did go looking for that classic white suit in 1978! Lords of the Jungle, one of the most lavish features of the year, stars Jake Deckard as the leader of a group of men who wash up ashore on a tropical island, the result of a disaster at sea. The movie chronicles their struggle to survive and their wait for rescue in a testosterone-drenched environment. A major plot twist at the end of the film comes as a shocker. Co-stars include RSS exclusives Blake Nolan, Collin O'Neal, Marc LaSalle, and Justin Christopher. Chris Ward is also premiering two new models, hairy boy-toy Steve Cruz and amazing discovery Rambo. I hadn't read a book in a long, long time, and when I had recently had some time to kill, I had two choices sitting around the house - "Goin' Down In La-La-Land" by Andy Zeffer, and "The Sluts" by Dennis Cooper. Both are about the seemier side of the gay sex trade - a perfect escape from the everyday drudgery of being a pornographer and a slut. I am still reading "The Sluts", and I highly recommend it if you are into reading about sadomasochistic murders, snuff films, junkies, hookers, with multiple layers of plot twists upon plot twists never knowing what is the truth and what is fabrication. And it's written as if you are reading it all from emails and online discussion boards. Dennis Cooper is one twisted fuck! "Goin' Down in La-La-Land" is the fictionalized re-telling of Andy Zeffer's brush with the gay porn industry that sidetracked him from his goal to be a successful mainstream actor in Hollywood. Though he admits early on that he was no saint before moving to La-La-Land, he wants it to be a cautionary tale of "look how far I've sunk" with the blame squarely on geography. He had already turned a few tricks during his earlier foray to New York, but the Big Apple apparently has more morals and less temptations, so the municipality of Los Angeles County must be the cause of his demise. "Goin' Down" is a fun romp for anyone who has spent any time in gay LA or knows the inner workings of the porn business. Zeffer made up fake names for real characters, but there's no mistaking "Missy Manhandler" is Chi Chi LaRue, "Bobby Steelhard" is Billy Herrington, and "Perry Bristol" is director Wash West. I can't imagine why people like Chi Chi would be concerned about having her nom de porn name would used in a novel, but there are some characters based on mainstream show business types that would certainly be upset by being outed in this book! However, some characters were completely fabricated, some were combinations of real personalities, and some were very thinly veiled closet cases! Lavender Lounge Blog: Obviously, the names were changed the protect "innocent", but what percentage of the characters are real versus fictional? Andy Zeffer: "I would say that it is a pretty even split, fifty/fifty in terms of fictional characters compared with characters inspired by actual people I met. Of course, some of the real-life characters become composites of one or more people, and there are exaggerations. But to even out the score, a lot of the reality-inspired characters were right on target. The book contains many accurate portrayals, as you yourself can attest to!" Zeffer's character sinks so low that he finally gives in to persistant coaxing to have penetrative sex on camera. It's to be a movie called "Bobby Steelhard's Hollywood Garage" directed by Tommy Manhandler. My porn trivia gene finally came in handy and I figured out it was actually "Billy Herrington"s Body Shop" directed by Chi Chi LaRue. It's available at Naked Sword, and the author, appearing as "Andy Zee", is in the first scene getting a blowjob in a public john from Peter Wilder. In the book, which takes place around 1999, Zeffer takes an escort job with a closeted billionaire who's a very powerful player in the entertainment business. I'm guessing it's Barry Diller. Zeffer also writes about an affair he had with major sitcom star that started out as another escort date, bloomed into a romance, and led to a dream job as the star's personal assistant. "John Vastelli" is described as, "His build was stout and thick, like that of a maintenance man. He had a belly that bulged a bit over his pants, but nothing that hung over. And a barrel chest and burly arms offset his wide middle, so in reality he looked in proportion."
