I just added a new gallery to the Vintage Bareback VIP Room called "Rock Hard" that features J. W. King and a blond hunk in an outdoor scene in the mountains. The magazine it came from had no masthead, no photo credits, no company name and no copyright information. My guess is an aspiring photographer got hired by a cigar-chomping guy with gold chains and shady reputation. The only directions were to "go out and shoot some boys and don't spend a lot of money". The photographer was probably just out of school and anxious to impress his new client. He probably heard of J.W. King as the "it" boy of the bar scene in LA or San Francisco and hit him up to do a shoot. With a hot property like the big dicked King locked in, the young photographer got the grandiose idea to do an outdoor shoot in the mountains.

To shoot hardcore porn in an outdoor setting, you really need to go somewhere completely remote so you don't get families or cops seeing you. That means a long drive and a long hike off the beaten path. No doubt it was just the two models, the photographer and a very rudimentary 35mm camera from the mid-1970's. No flash, no reflectors, no auto focus, no white balance and no digital playback. He probably left his light meter back at the dorm room, too.  

This type of shoot always starts out as all business, but after a long drive and a long hike to get away from onlookers, the "work" part becomes an annoyance compared to having a pleasant day outdoors. As the hours pass and the drugs kick in, the focus turns to the getting the sex over with. Surrounded by numerous trees, logs, rocks and undiscovered sights up ahead, it's hard to choose one spot to start shooting. The clouds shift, the tree branches move and the lighting changes as soon as you pick a good angle. Without a flash or a reflector, you are at the mercy of natural light. When your subject is half in bright sun and half in shade, the camera doesn't know how to give a good balance between overly bright light and deep shadows. Some of that can be corrected in photo processing lab, but there's no guarantee it will look good. After shooting digital for so long with the ability to preview each shot, I can't imagine going back the the uncertainty of not knowing how the shots will come out. Plus, even if the lab came up with some good photos, the printer could easily screw things up when putting it into magazine format.

Such is the problem with "Rock Hard". Most of the shots were in black and white, so I was able to do some remarkable corrections to the photos. The color photos still suffer from the dreaded color banding that I'm sure can be corrected somehow, but not known to me. Rather than presenting a series of muddy, washed out images I was able to improve a majority of the shots significantly, even better than they look when holding the magazine in your hand. Some of the close-ups actually look like, dare I say, fine art photos, with more detail than I expected. Some shots admittedly are duds, but given the possible scenario I dreamed up coupled with the antiquated film processing and low-end printing techniques, I think "Rock Hard" will be a delight to view for VIP Members of Vintage Bareback.

And, yes, they suck, rim, and fuck without rubbers on rocks, in trees and in front of a waterfall. J.W. King is gorgeous and works his giant cock like a trouper. Well worth the price of membership.

There has always been an underlying vein of humor associated with porn, and most attempts at piercing through that thin veil are unsuccessful or unintentionally funny. The makers of "Sex Salad" knew they were creating comedy, but tried their best to keep it straight-faced and butch.

So what's so funny about "Sex Salad"? It's the inventive ways to use food as sex toys. Rather than just shove a cucumber up a guy's ass, they went to the trouble of coring out the inside of the cucumber for the top to wear over his dick to fuck someone in the ass. One issue has a review of a paperback book entitled "I, Homosexual", an obvious reference to the science fiction novel, "I, Robot".

"International Nudist Sun" Magazine is an interesting exercise in publishing. Billed as "the sunbathing and nature living monthly magazine", it really stretched the idea of going out in  the sunlight as something spiritual and health-oriented. "This magazine hopes to do its part in the creation of a better world , in which no moral prejudices exist and which will function without the haste so characteristic of our present-day world. Last night was the premier party for Raging Stallion's "Focus / ReFocus" at Chaps in San Francisco. Just like in Hollywood, everyone loves the hype of movie premiers. It gives fans a chance to meet the stars in person and see an early version of the movie to get the juices flowing enough to go out and buy the movie.

As I reported last week, I've already been sucked into the hype for this movie having received a mysterious package with a teaser disc and cryptic note. I was so busy chatting up the porn stars and my friends at the crowded leather bar, I didn't see much of the film showing on the screens, but from what I did see, there are some very arresting images in it. The sex scenes and the dialogue are not only shot with the usual HD cameras, but there are alternate angles to every shot from hand held cameras, viewfinders, surveillance cameras, and peeping tom views. It's reminiscent of "Sex, Lies and Videotape" or the old "Max Headroom".

Director Tony Dimarco told me a long time ago he was working on a Film Noir style movie and I was expecting a black and white potboiler costume drama with big dicks hanging out of 1940's suits, wide silk ties, fast talking gumshoes and car chases in vintage DeSoto's. It's a modern Film Noir but they did cast a local actor/drag queen, Trauma Flintstone (credited as Joe Wicht), to play a hot headed police detective to grill porn discovery Cole Streets to find out what he knows about a series of murders. Last night I attended the Cockettes 40th Anniversary screening of their three films, "Palace", "Tricia's Wedding" and "Elevator Girls In Bondage" at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. I own a copy of "Elevator Girls In Bondage" but I had never seen either of the others. I was there mostly because it's an important step culturally for the drugged out, crazy drag theater troupe to be honored at a prestigious art venue like MOMA. I also wanted a chance to see hosts Justin Bond and Lady Miss Kier.

"Palace" gives what I believes is an accurate portrayal of the crazy spirit of the Cockettes, at least from the perspective an an urban legend. Shot in black and white with an unmatched soundtrack added, the film itself is representation of experimental, underground film making of the period. It showed backstage preparation, applying makeup, audience arriving, making costumes, a lot of nudity and drinking, and disjointed clips of the disjointed stage performance. It told no story, made no sense, but it was just fun to watch.

"Tricia's Wedding" was a popular short in the Midnight Movie circuit that poked fun at the real life event of Tricia Nixon's White House wedding. The copy we saw was beautifully restored in vivid color and perfect sound.

Years before Saturday Night Live made their mark lampooning celebrities in the news, "Tricia's Wedding", had drag queens impersonating all the political and cultural icons of the day that were (or were not) in attendance at the White House wedding. A highlight was soon-to-be disco diva Sylvester playing Coretta King singing a spiritual.  

Shot in two days with no rehearsal and a vague concept of a script, if a similar version were created today it would get lost in the shuffle on YouTube and forgotten in a matter of weeks. That it survived 40 years to be honored at MOMA is a tribute to it groundbreaking uniqueness and audacity. 

During the Q&A with the director, we discovered that "Tricia's Wedding" was actually secretly screened at the Nixon White House to determine if the FBI needed to further investigate the Cockettes for subversive or un-American activity.

"Elevator Girls In Bondage" is the feature length movie starring Rumi (below), the self-appointed archivist of the Cockettes and the driving force behind keeping the name alive. He's been touring the country hosting screenings and perpetuating the name. He was also instrumental in launching the stage revival of "Pearls Over Shanghai" here in San Francisco. I wrote about it months ago, and the production has continued it's open-ended run. With talented cast and actual rehearsals (imagine it!) the brilliance of the work can finally be appreciated. What a perfect way to spend your retirement years. Really.
