When I first started working in porn, my mentor told me some good advice, "Never let guys dance in gay porn." I just added a new gallery to the Vintage Bareback VIP Room called "Rock Hard" that features J. W. King and a blond hunk in an outdoor scene in the mountains. I sort of have an idea how the shoot happened, even though there is no actual way of knowing. The magazine it came from had no masthead, no photo credits, no company name and no copyright information. The magazine was titled "Rock Hard" because it mostly takes place on rocks (duh) and it is Volume 1 Issue 1. Were there subsequent issues? Doubtful.
My guess is an aspiring photographer got hired by a cigar-chomping guy with gold chains and shady reputation. The only directions were to "go out and shoot some boys and don't spend a lot of money". The photographer was probably just out of school and anxious to impress his new client. He probably heard of J.W. King as the "it" boy of the bar scene in LA or San Francisco and hit him up to do a shoot. With a hot property like the big dicked King locked in, the young photographer got the grandiose idea to do an outdoor shoot in the mountains.
To shoot hardcore porn in an outdoor setting, you really need to go somewhere completely remote so you don't get families or cops seeing you. That means a long drive and a long hike off the beaten path. No doubt it was just the two models, the photographer and a very rudimentary 35mm camera from the mid-1970's. No flash, no reflectors, no auto focus, no white balance and no digital playback. He probably left his light meter back at the dorm room, too.
This type of shoot always starts out as all business, but after a long drive and a long hike to get away from onlookers, the "work" part becomes an annoyance compared to having a pleasant day outdoors. As the hours pass and the drugs kick in, the focus turns to the getting the sex over with. Surrounded by numerous trees, logs, rocks and undiscovered sights up ahead, it's hard to choose one spot to start shooting. The clouds shift, the tree branches move and the lighting changes as soon as you pick a good angle. Without a flash or a reflector, you are at the mercy of natural light. When your subject is half in bright sun and half in shade, the camera doesn't know how to give a good balance between overly bright light and deep shadows. Some of that can be corrected in photo processing lab, but there's no guarantee it will look good. After shooting digital for so long with the ability to preview each shot, I can't imagine going back the the uncertainty of not knowing how the shots will come out. Plus, even if the lab came up with some good photos, the printer could easily screw things up when putting it into magazine format.
Such is the problem with "Rock Hard". Most of the shots were in black and white, so I was able to do some remarkable corrections to the photos. The color photos still suffer from the dreaded color banding that I'm sure can be corrected somehow, but not known to me. Rather than presenting a series of muddy, washed out images I was able to improve a majority of the shots significantly, even better than they look when holding the magazine in your hand. Some of the close-ups actually look like, dare I say, fine art photos, with more detail than I expected. Some shots admittedly are duds, but given the possible scenario I dreamed up coupled with the antiquated film processing and low-end printing techniques, I think "Rock Hard" will be a delight to view for VIP Members of Vintage Bareback.
And, yes, they suck, rim, and fuck without rubbers on rocks, in trees and in front of a waterfall. J.W. King is gorgeous and works his giant cock like a trouper. Well worth the price of membership.

But back to the movie itself, "Sex Salad" was an obscure movie that has been sort of "lost" over the years. Long before Johnny Knoxville and his gang started performing "Jackass" style hi-jinx, (actually before those boys were born...), the unknown film maker did a small series of kinky videos that were more slapstick than sensual. There has always been an underlying vein of humor associated with porn, and most attempts at piercing through that thin veil are unsuccessful or unintentionally funny. The makers of "Sex Salad" knew they were creating comedy, but tried their best to keep it straight-faced and butch.
So what's so funny about "Sex Salad"? It's the inventive ways to use food as sex toys. Rather than just shove a cucumber up a guy's ass, they went to the trouble of coring out the inside of the cucumber for the top to wear over his dick to fuck someone in the ass. The hard-shell waxy skin of a cucumber makes a great green prosthetic dick and the extra wide thickness of it pleases the hungry bottom, actually giving new meaning to "hungry bottom".

I just received another shipment of vintage gay porn magazines from eBay! This batch of all early 1960's "posing strap" physique and nudist magazines is going to be fun.
I got three copies of "Tomorrow's Man" Magazine, all from 1963-1966. TM was billed as a "serious" magazine for bodybuilding enthusiasts. It's full of ads for weight lifting equipment and training manuals, and skimpy crotch socks (posing straps) "for physique posing and over-all sunbathing". One issue has a review of a paperback book entitled "I, Homosexual", an obvious reference to the science fiction novel, "I, Robot".
"International Nudist Sun" Magazine is an interesting exercise in publishing. Billed as "the sunbathing and nature living monthly magazine", it really stretched the idea of going out in the sunlight as something spiritual and health-oriented. "This magazine hopes to do its part in the creation of a better world , in which no moral prejudices exist and which will function without the haste so characteristic of our present-day world. We are trying to promote new methods of education, which will help us realize the true goal of sunbathing - a new and beautiful life in freedom and nature."

Dennis Cole, a stuntman who rose to TV stardom in the 1966 series "Felony Squad" and went on to dozens of guest-starring appearances throughout the 1970s and '80s, died Sunday at Holy Cross Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He was 69.
The cause of death was not released.
Although born in Detroit, Cole had the blond, athletic look of a quintessential California surfer, which earned him the attention of physique magazines and led to his casting as rookie detective Jim Briggs on "Felony." After that show's 2 1/2 year-run, Cole followed with the series "Bracken's World" and "Bearcats!" and a stint on the daytime soap "The Young and the Restless" that began in 1981.
Cole guest-starred on such series as "Medical Center," "Police Story," "The Love Boat" and "Charlie's Angels," where he met his second wife, Jaclyn Smith, to whom he was married from 1978-81.
He encountered tragedy in 1991 when his son Joe, from his first marriage to Sally Ann Bergeron, was murdered during a home invasion robbery. The case was never solved.
In recent years, Cole became a real estate broker in Fort Lauderdale with his wife, Ree Cole, whom he recently divorced amicably. He is survived by his brother Richard.

I'm not sure what the title "Caught Hot Handed" as a magazine title is supposed to mean. The popular slang phrase is usually "caught RED handed", which doesn't make much sense literally, either. Whenever a "cool" car is needed for a TV commercial, movie, TV show, or music video it's always a classic car from the 50's, 60's or 70's. Never a new car. Never a car from the 40's. Never a car from the 80's. Gangster rappers don't drive 1983 Chrysler K-cars.
But what did they do in the 1970's when they needed a "cool" car for a porn shoot? They got a Ford Model A, of course! "Hot Rods" is another of my newly acquired vintage gay porn magazines from the early 1970's. It features a young Jack Wrangler having sex with a long haired hottie in one of Henry Ford's finest, and naturally, the action takes place in the rumble seat. (This is where I would insert a gag about Jack Wrangler causing some "rumbling" in the other guy's "seat".)
"Hot Rods" is 60 slurping pages of man on man outdoor sex in various horseless carriages - the aforementioned Model A, a Jeep Wrangler and a Jeep Wagoneer (with leopard skin interior, no less!) We've forgotten how secretive and underground the adult industry was at the time. As a result, most of the old magazines I've unearthed have no masthead, no contact address and no copyright information," says Kliem.
Sexuality is the core component that gay men share with each other and these films and magazines were often the only connections gay men had with other members of the tribe. Below the surface of mere exploitation of naked bodies, they are a time capsule of how we lived, how we dressed and how we connected when there were no rules, norms or precedent.
