Vintage Gay Porn - Gay Historical Movies
Two intereresting events are coming up in New York for fans of vintage gay porn - documentary about gay sex in the 1970's and a screening of films by Bruce of LA. The photo on the right is bodybuilder model Mike Sill shot by Bruce of LA. (woof!)
If you don't already know, Lavender Lounge has a huge collection of vintage gay porn in the VIP Room, with many photos by Bruce of LA and Athletic Model Guild. Those of us stuck on the Left Coast won't be able to attend the NY events will simply have to jerk off to the beefcake photos at Lavender Lounge! (Look for the Groovy Guys section!)
One Night only in NYC ~ Tuesday, November 15th NYC Village resident - actor - archivist Larry Yalkowsky has been collecting physique & mass culture memorabilia for the last 20 yrs. He has assembled close to 3 hours of lost Technicolor physique film of the late renowned gay physique photographer Bruce Bellas (1909-1974) mostly known for his still photographs & linked to his contemporaries like Herb Ritts, Robert Mapplethorpe & Bruce Weber. Bruce of Los Angeles best known for his iconic masculine images of men as cowboys or greek gods also tried his hand @ live motion picture films which few of his fans are aware of. Bruce Bellas made beautiful motion pictures in full color that were never shown but sold through the mail in 3rd generation reductions. For many of the color films on 8mm - the years have not been kind to them as they have faded to a bright "pink" literally. (Does that have some extra meaning? MN)
The surviving Bruce of LA black & white 8mm loops that sold in the mail in the 1960's are also hard to appreciate as they were made from 2 internegatives - color to black & white and then black & white again leaving a washed out undetailed image. Viewers of Larry Yalkowsky's Bruce Bellas films will also be treated to the gay pride of pre stonewall in the New Orleans gay newsreels called " Carnival Day parts 1 & 2 " and "Carnival on Bourban Street " where outlandish boa & tiara clad drag queens & near naked gay men sprayed w/ multi colored body paint flex their muscles for the camera & heterosexual onlookers watching in joy & amusement on the sidelines. These films reflect Bellas earlier still work photography on Muscle Beach California - where contestants flexed & the onlookers look very period & fascinated by the pageantry. (I'd be standing there, very fascinated MN)

Gay Sex In The 70's
Opens Friday, November 4th
The Quad ~ 34 West 13th Street
Documentary producer/director Joseph Lovett focuses his lens on the unbridled sexual passion & exploration that marked the 12 yrs from Stonewall (1969) to the 1st reported cases of AIDS (1981). With access to a filmic & photographic treasure trove of erotic life on NYC West Side Piers, trucks, bars, dance clubs, baths & beaches. (Where's the beach? MN) Lovett's cast of storytellers takes us from the remarkably repressed pre-Stonewall period to an era of sexual excess unparalleled since ancient Rome. Straightforward, funny & titillating @ the same time, they tell their stories w/ remarkable wit, humor & perspective. For younger people those who became sexually active after the age of AIDS this film may be a startling revelation of what everyday life was like. When American youth were cutting loose from Puritanical values & ascribing to the watchword of the time "if it feels good, do it." (those were the days, huh? MN)
