Night of The Living Easter

Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence
NIGHT OF THE LIVING EASTER: TIME TO PLAY “WAKE THE DEAD” SISTERS CELEBRATE 28 YEARS OF SERVING THE COMMUNITY
Never able to let sleeping deities lie, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Inc. announce their annual birthday bash is going to “Wake the Dead” on Easter Sunday, April 8th, in Dolores Park in San Francisco, with children’s festivities beginning at 11:00 a.m. and entertainment gradually becoming more adult towards the end of the party at 4:00pm with the selection of this year’s Hunky Zombie Jesus Contest winner!

“Easter Night is coming early this year,” proclaimed Sister Ferrah Moans, Easter Committee Chairnun. “It is time to mix it up a little and let the darkness know that it is just as welcome as the light on our Easter stage.” Excited to see how this theme on resurrection plays itself out, the party will be hosted by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence and friends with special guest M.C. Midori. Festivities start at 11:00 am with the traditional Children’s Easter which includes an egg hunt, egg roll and egg toss, along with story telling and face-painting. The heat turns up and the lights get dim at 1:00pm as many well-known local entertainers take the stage (such as Ethel Merman, Trauma Flintstone, Kitten on The Keys, Gooferman, and a few other surprises)! Plan ahead: The Bonnet Contest is at 1:00 pm this year, and with a nod towards the original One who rose from the dead, the Hunky Zombie Jesus contest is at 3:00pm.

Interspersed throughout the entertainment will be the granting of $18,000 to 17 organizations serving queer folk and social justice causes. As Sister Edith Myflesh, Mistress of Ceremonies/President of the San Francisco Order is quick to point out: “We've come a long way since Easter weekend 1979, when three of our founders tried to shake up the growing complacency and mainstreaming of the queer community by walking the Castro in nuns habits (one nun even had a toy machine gun and cigar)." Sister Dionna Cross, Chairnun of the Grants Committee adds: "Our annual celebration is now not only a time to shake things up, but to reflect on 28 years of service to our community which includes individual ministry and spiritual support, hospice work, political action, public health outreach, and as always fundraising, especially for underserved queer organizations.”

As an added bonus, Sister maeJoy B. withU will be leading the Doggie Dawn Darshan with a few plastic bags, some biohazard spray and several hunky porn stars to keep everybody motivated! The “sunrise service” will be convened at 6:45 am in Dolores Park (you may not see the crack of dawn, but you may see some porn crack if you play your cards right!). Members of the community, especially those with tail-wagging friends, are encouraged to participate in making the park safe for the hordes of zombies destined to rise later that day. Doggie communion (treats) will be provided for our four-legged attendees. In charge of making the park spic and span before and after the event, Sister maeJoy’s parting words are: “Remember: Salvation comes to those who bring trash bags and clean up after themselves.”

“Night of the Living Easter” is a Perpetual Indulgence production. The event is free to all, and donations are gladly accepted.

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, Inc. is a leading-edge Order of queer nuns. Since their first appearance in San Francisco on Easter weekend, 1979, the Sisters have devoted themselves to community service, ministry and outreach to those on the edges, and to promoting human rights, respect for diversity and spiritual enlightenment. The Sisters believe all people have a right to express their unique joy and beauty and to use humor and irreverent wit to expose the forces of bigotry, complacency and guilt that chain the human spirit.
