Pink Saturday 2007 Photos

San Francisco Pink Saturday Gay Pride

Pink Saturday is the un-official street party in the Castro the night before Pride in San Francisco. Why is it "un-official"? Well, the City trusts the Sisters enough to cut them some slack with permits and fees here and there, but at the same time, they don't want the event to turn into the madness that occurs in the same block during Halloween. (On Halloween last year, 9 people got shot.) On the behest of the mayor's office, the Sisters pleaded with the local media to go along with a media blackout of the event prior to Pink Saturday.

Apparently, the Bay Area Reporter ran out of controversial muckraking stories just prior to Pride, so they tried to stir up the shit by running a front page story ABOUT the media blackout. Hey, thanks alot.

Pink Saturday does not need publicity. Thousands of people know that it's going to happen, and those that don't - they should stay home. But what about the tabloid journalism of stirring up controversy just for the sake of stirring it up? Do I want a local publication that questions authority and digs deep into stories? Yes, of course. I don't want another bar rag that just lists events and kisses the asses of whoever buys the most ads. The BAR has always been unafraid of taking political risks, but I just think they ran out of local scandals and needed to start one. Whatever.

Otherwise, I hope you enjoy the controversial, challenging and beautiful photos I shot of Pink Saturday 2007 in the Castro district of San Francisco. I think these three shots pretty much summed up the experience of Pink Saturday - especially the last one.
