Dore Alley (Up Your Alley) Photos 2008
We're in the middle of the big season for gay street fairs here in San Francisco. Gay Pride was a few weeks ago, Folsom Fair is coming up, I've been making my plans for Hairrison Street Fair, but yesterday was the rehearsal for Folsom Fair, the Up Your Alley Street Fair (or Dore Alley).
This year they extended the footprint of the fair to an additional two blocks of 10th Street, but it was still very crowded. Had they not added the extra space, it would have been very, very uncomfortably crowded.
This time around, I made sure to interact with my friends rather than get frantic about shooting pictures. I could easier get myself all in a tizzy about not missing any photo ops, but the reality is, you can't be everywhere and shoot everything no matter how hard you try. I just chilled, took a shot here and there as the spirit moved me, and ended up with a respectable 367 pictures. And I got to get caught up with my friends.
I saw a lot more nakedness this year, and a lot more public sex, even right in the middle of the street. Those type of guys are never the kind you actually want see naked, but god love 'em for putting it out there.

That parking lot is now condos, as is the big abandoned building on the corner, and a few other properties down the street. I took a walk up Dore Street at one point yesterday and hardly recognized the street. It's gotten very yuppified, and I fear those new neighbors won't put up with street fair shenanigans for too much longer.

Wakefield Poole's "Bijou" Screening at Revival House

Senator Phil Gramm's Connection to Porn
I found this item on Huffington Post, and I thought it was ironically funny. I also thought it might be a windfall for my client, Alpha Blue Archives. It seems Republican blowhard Senator Phil Gramm at one point took steps to invest in a soft core porn movie in the 1970's called "Truck Stop Women". It sounded like a movie distributed by Alpha Blue titled "Breaker Beauties". Turns out, they're not the same movie, but it would have been a great boost for sales if it was!
And it's really too bad that it wasn't Matt Sterling's Truck Stop for Brentwood, which was made around the same time, too. Now THAT would have been a good story!

Titan Model Alex Baresi In Painting by Ross Watson
Titan Man Alex Baresi (www.alexbaresi.eu) is the subject of a new painting by world renowned Australian artist Ross Watson. As a respectable (ahem) art critic, I adore his talent and technical abilities, but I would think the artist could have done something more with this series. Okay, it's a clever idea to put an image of a contemporary homoerotic male model into a classic painting, but I think he missed an opportunity to integrate the two images together better. They just look like a quickie cut-and-paste job. Just my opinion, but I gotta give him props for the craftsmanship.
Ross Watson's choice of model, Alex Baresi, for his most recent major painting could not have been more fitting. Painting the classically handsome Italian, who was voted International Gay Porn Star for 2007, before Caravaggio's smiling St. John is apt indeed.
When Caravaggio unveiled his painting in 1600 it caused a scandal in Rome. Commissioned by the Cardinal Del Monte, the painting shocked the church. St. John's depiction, naked and smiling at the viewer and clutching a ram, a symbol of lust, was unprecedented.
Watson's art is collected by major museums, including the National Gallery of Australia, and distinguished private collectors including Sir Elton John and J.D. Wolfensohn, former World Bank President. His last major painting featured Scissor Sisters frontman Jake Shears, who was recommended as a model by Elton John.
Over four centuries on, Watson, an Australian artist with an international audience, has provided Baresi, one of the most popular porn actors of his time, with the most perfect and complimentary visual metaphors, deftly fusing the classical and contemporary.

iPhone In a Blender
Though I have been counting the days till the July 11th debut of the new iPhone 3g, I knew better than to run out and get it the first day. Sure enough, people were waiting in line 36 hours outside the stores, and when they finally plunked down their money, too many people tried to activate the new iPhones all at the same time. The system got overloaded and crashed.
I have plenty of patience, but not when it comes to waiting in line. By next week, you'll be able to walk right in and take it home. I'll wait.

Two Bozos Dead - Larry Harmon and Jesse Helms
Though there were many entertainers using the name "Bozo the Clown", Larry Harmon was the best known Bozo. Harmon, who appeared as Bozo the Clown for decades and licensed the name to other Bozos around the world, died at age 83 on Thursday, July 3, 2008, at his home of congestive heart failure.
Hours later, on July 4th, one of the U.S. Senate's biggest Bozos, Senator Jesse Helms, also died. Two Bozos dead in 24 hours.
In 1993, when then-President Clinton sought confirmation for former San Francisco Supervisor Roberta Achtenberg , an openly homosexual assistant secretary at the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Helms registered his disgust. "I'm not going to put a damned lesbian in a position like that," he said in a newspaper interview at the time. "If you want to call me a bigot, fine."

Steve Cruz Is Hotter Than Hell

The trailer for Part 2 looks really good, featuring more art direction, satanic ritual, Ricky Sinz and my favorite walking satanic ritual, Tober Brandt!

Wenda Watch Kicks Ass At Santa Fe Pride
For a long time I've felt that in terms of gay rights, our job is pretty much done in the big cities. The next challenge is to take it to the smaller towns in the US and overseas. That's where activists really need to change some hearts and minds.
From what I've heard, Mexico City is now the largest Gay Pride in the world. I saw some pictures, and it could very well be Miami or New York City. The floats are elaborate, the costumes are interchangeable, and the men are hot. Surprisingly, a lot of the banner and signs are in English, including the float labeled "Bear Pride". Is there is no Spanish translation?
I also read about India's first Gay Pride. Now that's an achievement that needs our support.
But closer to home, my friend Wenda Watch has taken what she learned in LA and San Francisco to help shake up Santa Fe, New Mexico. The video above is Wenda lip syncing to one of her signature Dolly Parton numbers at Santa Fe Pride. Wenda wrote, "On Saturday I was in the Pride Parade and my float won first place. Now that gay acceptance is beginning to creep into mainstream neighborhoods, there are more and more openly gay people moving back to the suburbs and small towns. If you can't handle big city congestion, high rents, and competition, a mellower environment might be an option. And small towns could certainly use more ambitious, experienced, gay go-getters. Think big fish in a small pond.
