15th Annual Hard Choice Awards

Detroit - Great House Sale of 2009
I got my bike stolen last night. My mailbox was vandalized on Sunday. The entire side of my house got covered in graffiti over Christmas. Why do I still live in San Francisco?

The Catholic Corporation Now Selling Admission To Heaven
The Catholic Corporation is bringing back one of their most successful fund-raising schemes, the selling of "indulgences". In essence it's a scam to convince the faithful that they can buy their way into heaven. Wow, sign me up! Most people only go to church for "insurance", so this should make it easier for them to just plunk down an ATM card. When pressed about "selling salvation" for a fee, the Catholic Corporation is quick to respond that it is, but it isn't. WTF? They claim the rules are very complex, there's no guarantee of admission to heaven, sometimes you can only buy a few years of purgatory, but, of course, it's completely voluntary. You pay money, you get nothing for it, and there's no guarantee. Sounds like selling snake oil to me.

The announcement in church bulletins and on Web sites has been greeted with
enthusiasm by some and wariness by others. But mainly, it has gone over the heads of
a vast generation of Roman Catholics who have no idea what it means: "Bishop
Announces Plenary Indulgences."
In recent months, dioceses around the world have been offering Catholics a spiritual
benefit that fell out of favor decades ago - the indulgence, a sort of amnesty from
punishment in the afterlife - and reminding them of the church's clout in mitigating
the wages of sin.
The fact that many Catholics under 50 have never sought one, and never heard of
indulgences except in high school European history (where Martin Luther denounces
the selling of them in 1517 and ignites the Protestant Reformation) simply makes
their reintroduction more urgent among church leaders bent on restoring fading
traditions of penance in what they see as a self-satisfied world.

Gabor was a passenger in an automobile accident that occurred on November 27, 2002. She was initially reported as being in a coma when she was actually conscious at the time medical assistance arrived. She left the hospital in early January 2003, but required continued physical therapy. Gabor sued and was awarded $2 million.
On July 7, 2005, she suffered a massive stroke, leaving her in critical condition at a local hospital. She underwent surgery to remove a blockage in her carotid artery. She returned home on July 15. In early September 2007, she underwent surgery to deal with after-effects of her previous stroke. On September 18, 2007, aged 90, she underwent surgery to treat a leg infection, which developed as a result of her immobility.
Gabor has been married nine times. She was divorced seven times, and one marriage was annulled. Her husbands, in chronological order, are:

She refused to leave George Sanders to marry Rubirosa, whereupon Rubirosa married Barbara Hutton (for 53 days) and then renewed his relationship with Gabor, who claimed that Rubirosa proposed to her every time he could, and would change the subject when she refused. They had a four-year relationship and were at one time engaged. Gabor essentially broke the engagement when she took a part in the movie Death of a Scoundrel (1956), which starred her ex-husband George Sanders, over Rubirosa's intense objections.

In 2007 the GayVN Awards had only one D-List celebrity, Kathy Griffin, as host of the show. This year they have 2 D-Listers (Janice Dickinson, Alec Mapa), one C Minus-Lister (Margaret Cho) and one XYZ-Lister, Greg the Gay Sportscaster. Does that combination add up to a B-List of celebrities? Who the fuck knows? I think it will be fun in any case.
Margaret Cho's name has been mentioned as a possible host for several years. Alec Mapa showed up at the COLT 40th Anniversary a few years ago. Project Runway's Jay McCarroll
Last night I attended a preview screening of Jay McCarroll's new movie, "11 Minutes". You may know him as the winner of the first Project Runway - you know, the chubby guy with the funny clothes and multi-colored hair with all the witty comebacks? Yeah, that one.
What the public doesn't know is Jay McCarroll actually turned down the prize money from Project Runway for reasons he is not allowed to explain. No doubt the producers of the show had too many restrictions about what he could or could not do with products under his own name. He has since then made a name for himself even without help from the show.
First there was a spin-off show called "Project Jay" where cameras followed him trying to make a dress for Heidi Klum to wear at an awards show. After making the dress, she didn't like it and never wore it. (She wouldn't even appear on camera because she required $11,000 worth of hair and makeup to be on camera!)
"11 Minutes" takes place in 2006 when Jay McCarroll started the process of showing a line of his own clothes at Bryant Park completely financed by himself. He utilized as much free labor as possible, including a PR firm, to pull together a runway show. The documentary follows him every step of the way dealing with the realities of running a small business and leading up to a specific show date. Jay is fun-loving, goofy and acerbic throughout, making it a fun, campy look behind the scenes.
The runway show was fabulous, but not without it's little disasters. The models came out in the wrong order, the shoe maker was still assembling them right up to showtime, and one model's dress slipped down completely below her bra. A few of the outfits were clunkers, many were things we've seen a million times, but the good pieces were brilliant.
The sad part of the movie came after the big runway show. The whole point of runway shows is to build up a buzz and get stores to buy the stuff. Only one store, Urban Outfitters, actually came back to make a purchase. In fashion, there is a constant battle between what looks good and what will sell. The buyers from Urban Outfitters expected his stuff to be outrageous and only placed a small order because it was too much like other stuff they already sell. Jay was disappointed that the order was so small, but as it turned out, the Chinese factory still couldn't get it out in time, so Urban Outfitters canceled.
I really felt bad for Jay McCarroll because I can see similarities in my business, too. I could spend a pile of money throwing events or buying advertising hoping to create a buzz. The magic doesn't always happen, no matter how hard you try.

My Superbowl Sunday
No, I don't watch the Superbowl, I don't have Superbowl fever, I don't care, and I don't care that I don't care. Someone was so paranoid about earthquake-proofing this house they followed guidelines that call for "sheer walls" of plywood attached with 2 inch screws every four inches. I must have removed 100 screws in that 3 foot section of wall - except for the screws that wouldn't come out. I had to removed a bunch of screws with a crow bar.
