Pussy Tourette Re-Surfaces

I did not attend the Karen Dior Memorial last weekend, but by all accounts, it seemed like a fitting tribute to the late actress and porn director. You can, however, read the details at CockRing.org.

Apparently, one of the highlights of the show was the return to the stage of the legendary drag performer Pussy Tourette after a very long 4 year absence. In the early 90's the paths of Pussy and I crossed many times as we were both very active in the local underground gay scene here in San Francisco.

In the late 80's and early 90's Club Uranus was the juggernaut that revived the club scene in San Francisco. Club Uranus brought people out of the woodwork who had previously been hiding at home fearful of AIDS. Go go dancers at Uranus were chosen for their fierceness rather than their Abercombie-ness, and Pussy's ballet training and stage presence made her a club favorite, but she didn't have name or character yet.

In the spring of 1991 Sister Psychedelia produced an Investiture party for new incoming Sisters (including myself) to get our white veils. Pussy was invited to perform as a solo act for the first time and had never used the name before. At a planning meeting, the yet-to-be-named Pussy turned to me while filling out the contact sheet and asked, "How do you spell 'Tourette'?"

The second time Pussy performed as Pussy Tourette was on my TV show (also named Lavender Lounge). This time she had two backup singers in sexy nurse's outfits, and a stud that simulated sex with her behind a backlit screen. Much more than a gowns-and-crowns lipsync dragon, Pussy Tourette sang live to her own original songs. Choreography and style were always impeccable.

She appeared on my TV show several times, as well as some of the live shows I produced, including shows in LA, Russian River and our big Halloween extravaganzas. Pussy's finest moment, however, was performing on the main stage at the 1993 March on Washington. I remember being totally blown away by seeing "French Bitch" performed on CSPAN.

The last time I saw Pussy was at Chi Chi LaRue's infamous birthday in 1998 that got busted by the cops. Since then, numerous people have been asking me about her whereabouts, including her longest running backup singer, Christina. It's good to see she is still alive and kicking.
