Gay Porn Star Mickey Squires Re-Surfaces
After reading my exclusive interview with 70's gay porn star Bruno, another COLT man from the 70's contacted me for an interview. Mickey Squires stumbled across my blog entry about Bruno, and said to himself, "Hey, I knew Bruno back when we both escorted in New York. I want to be interviewed on Lavender Lounge Blog, too!" He contacted me and I had the pleasure of speaking to him briefly on the phone yesterday for this exclusive interview.
I have to admit, I did not recognize the name, Mickey Squires, when he first contacted me. With number of gay porn stars that come and go each year, and my impending Alzheimers, you gotta give me a break. However, Mickey says he still gets emails from fans. And more recently, when he hosts bear events, he still gets guys come up to him and say that his movies and stills helped shape their appreciation of masculine-looking men.
Mickey Squires grew up in Hollywood, and spent the early 70's in San Francisco. But in 1979, while pumping iron at the Jim Morris Gym in West Hollywood, he was asked to pose for an ad for Probe, the big gay disco in LA at the time. The Probe ad got him noticed and the photographer nearly got him in Playgirl, but they rejected him because they wanted more of a "pretty boy" look.
Mickey also worked out with former COLT model Manfred Speers (who still does recruiting for COLT to this day). One day Manfred asked Mickey if he was interested in posing for COLT. Mickey's first reaction was to turn around and look behind him to see if he was talking to someone else! "Me?", he astonishly asked. Manfred recruited him to perform in films (they were all 8mm at the time) because they needed guys willing to actually have sex on film, unlike the big bodybuilders who would only did still photos for COLT.
At the time, he was also courted by Lou Thomas from Target Studio in New York, but COLT's Jim French, probably "hired him out of spite", just to one-up his competitor at Target. Target thought Mickey's dick was too small, but French said, "...with those balls...".
Mickey co-starred with Jack Hacker in a scene for COLT called, "The Come On", which is now available in "The Best of COLT 3". Throughout his career, Mickey Squires actually did three photo sessions and three movies, but one did not get released. His other movie is part of "Sunstrokes: The Best of COLT 2", but both movies are available on various COLT compilations. (see Videogaphy below)
While working at the drug paraphanalia counter at the Pleasure Chest in 1979 and 1980 (a much sought-after position at the time!), he met Mikal Bales from Zeus Studio. Zeus contacted COLT for permission to hire Mickey for photos, but COLT responded by saying he'd never work for COLT again.
Over the course of his career, Mickey Squires appeared on about 20 magazine covers: "as many covers as Al Parker". (By the way, the squating photo above was shot by Al Parker.) He recalls, "While passing a news stand in New York in 1983, I was on the cover of Honcho and Mandate at the same time. It's like being on the cover of Vogue and Elle in the same month. Where do you go from there?"
Mickey Squires is now 57 years old and living in Los Angeles. He often gets invited to MC at gay muscle events and bear events like the Great Lakes Bears 10th Anniversary during IML weekend a few years ago. He writes a column for BeefyBoyz.com called "Hey Mickey!" which started as an advice column, and morphed into more of a collection of personal essays. He also graced the May 2003 cover of 100% Beef Magazine, the de facto successor to the old Bear Magazine.
When asked about the development of the "bear" community, Mickey explained, "In the old days, the only older gay men who were out and open about being gay were Liberace-type caftan queens. There were no gay masculine role models. The bear community grew out of Average Joe's meeting up with other Average Joe's who have been out all their adult lives."
He went on to say, "bears are the friendliest and most unassuming" of any group of men he's met. "And in numbers there is empowerment."
